Who says you can only get a good workout by going to the gym?! I certainly don’t! Here are five alternatives….
To be completely honest with you, I hate working out. Why? Not because it’s hard work or gets sweaty but because it’s not creative. You complete a set routine and it bores me out of my mind. And when I know something’s gonna be boring, I am not motivated to do it.
Yet staying fit is crucial to your health — and it’s especially important to keep up around this season! (Think Thanksgiving dinner & Christmas sweets.) So how do we do it then? Well I’m here to give you some suggestions.
Go on a hike. But baby it’s cold outside! (Psst — that’s what jackets are for!) Find a trail by your home (start easy and you can work your way up!) and go solo or grab a buddy to come along with you (they probably need it too). Try bringing along your camera to capture some nature and work on those photography skills!
Take it indoors. Rock climbing anyone? That’s a great example of an indoor activity that will give you a work out and challenge you both mentally and physically. Or sign up for drop-in indoor soccer or take a kickboxing class!
Hit the pool. The beach may be too cold now (unless you live in the tropics which in that case I envy you!) but there’s always the indoor community pool. (Think hot tub!) But before you hit the jacuzzi, try swimming a few laps first or try my favourite option — run (sorry, walk) up the stairs to the waterslide then once you come down, hit those stairs again!
Change up the scenery. If you have a regular yoga practice or pilates routine, try changing up the scenery. Instead of working out in the same room every time, roll out your mat somewhere new whether that be a different room, outdoors, or at a friend’s house!
Have a dance party. You heard that right! Dancing really pumps that cardiovascular system and works on those leg muscles. Invite some friends, turn on some of your favourite tunes, and free style it or follow along on Just Dance!
